COLUMBIA, S. C. (WACH) — Many people are headed to the lake for the holiday weekend, but DHEC is issuing a warning about potentially harmful algae. Bryan Rabon, manager of DHEC’s Aquatic Science Program, says that the harmful algae is often seen during the summer months. Algal blooms exist in natural water bodies nearly everywhere and are not unique to South Carolina. They occur when tiny plant-like organisms called algae and cyanobacteria overgrow in rivers, lakes, and oceans.

Syracuse police say a 7-year-old boy is among the victims of a shooting on South Salina Street in Syracuse. The shooting happened at 10:01 PM, in the 1900 block of S. Salina St. just a few blocks from Kirk Park. Police say 3 people were taken to the hospital by a private vehicle. The 7-year-old boy was shot in the back. He is in critical condition but is stable at this time. Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh responded to the shooting scene Monday night as yet another child was shot in the city.
