HYANNIS — A Massachusetts State Police trooper assigned to the Yarmouth barracks was shot during a traffic stop Friday night, according to a statement from the agency.
The trooper was shot shortly after 11:30 pm after stopping a vehicle on Camp Street, according to the statement.
Another trooper took him to Cape Cod Hospital and from there he was taken by ambulance to a Boston hospital.
The injury is not considered life-threatening, according to the statement. According to witnesses, he was shot in the hand.
The suspect in the vehicle fled after the shooting, according to the statement. A search is ongoing for the occupant or occupants of the vehicle, the statement says.
A large contingent of police, including a state police helicopter, were outside a condominium complex on West Main Street in Hyannis on Saturday morning.
No further information was available Saturday morning.
